I see him as being the forerunner to todays Harry Potter (only not as moody and hard edged) and Negi Springfield (only not as popular with the girls)

And no it's not just cos he a boy wizard with specks...

One thing I never understood about him: They always called him "Presto"; was that his actual name? His parents were cruel enough to name their kid Presto?? No wonder he's the token "wimp" of the gang. Ah, well. He's the wizard, which makes him my favorite character by default. :D

His true name is Albert probably because of the philosopher and alchemist Alberto Magno.

Lol you asked this quite a long time ago, and probably I'm risking looking like a total geek by answering this but, what the hell xD

I'm a fan of the show, and some time ago did some research just being curious (actually found a fanpage lol). The thing is, it is implied that these kids already knew each other from school (and also it is implied they all attended the same school).
You never get to know "Presto's" real name, but it is stated that before the events in the show, he already used to try doing magic tricks around school and calling himself by the nickname "Presto", so the rest of the kids just started calling him like that way before arriving to "Dungeons and Dragons"
