Land O Lakes Indian Maiden by kevinbolk Land O Lakes Indian Maiden by kevinbolk
Next in my series of "Lovely Lady Mascots" art cards is the Land-O-Lakes Indian Maiden.

I was trying to avoid the mildly racist/culturally insensitive mascots (Sorry, folks, no Aunt Jemima), but I've always had a soft spot for the Land-O-Lakes girl. I'm kind of amazed she's made it from the 1920's to the present day relatively unchanged where similar ethnic stereotype characters (like Uncle Ben, Aunt Jemima etc) got a justifiable makeover or (like the the Frito Bandito or the Cherry Clan) were eliminated all together.

She was originally painted in 1928 by Arthur Hanson (a colleague of Norman Rockwell, interestingly enough). His original art hangs at the company headquarters in Minnesota. Not sure if it's available for public display though.

Next up: Wendy of Wendy's Old Fashioned Hamburgers

Land O' Lakes Indian Maiden is a registered trademark of Land O' Lakes, Inc.

Minnesota is the home of several Indian tribes, and it's a dairy state. I guess it made sense in 1928. The picture is tasteful and does not pander, just a nice girl in Pocahontas cosplay who wants you to buy this butter, so that's probably why she's still with us unchanged.

i don't see anything rasist about it. the native american indians are BOSS! but anyways, land-o-lakes is minnesotan, and it's good they used a good symbol for that. the Ojibwa and the Dakota were the 2 main tribes there, and it's great that they're a symbol of minnesota (for all the good they originally contributed here)

i love this art here by the way, it's so cute! :meow:

I really don't see anything racist about this.
This is just a mascot.
I mean come high school mascot was a Native American Warrior and I saw nothing racist about that.
I looked up to the mascot as something that stood for strength, hard work, and the fighting spirit.
Animals can be our mascots like wolves and tigers....why can't humans?
I'm familiar with this brand and I see nothing racist about it. It is just an Native American Maiden holding a box of butter. What is so mildly racist about that?

I don't get it. How is a Native American girl racist, in and of herself?
boosterjones1999 Featured By Owner Apr 16, 2011  Hobbyist Writer
As it happens (although it may just be that I'm a white UK male) but how is this seen as raciest?

One one hand all I can see is an image of sweet looking young Native American girl holding a packet of 'Land O Lakes' Butter.

She's not going round beating her kids (or being beaten herself by her husband) or any of the other negative things that are/were said about Native Americans at the time the original ad was painted.

Unless the ad that you based this on had her looking like she was in a WB cartoon about 'Cowboys Indians and Bugs Bunny' or that 'Land O' Lakes used to/still do exploit their Native American workers (you never know) that they doubtless must have in their workforce then I don't see anything offensive In this image, which I only saw (until I read the text below it) as being picture of a pretty girl who reminded me of an Anime girl named Zia from an 1980s cartoon entitled 'The Mysterious Cities of Gold' Zia by the way was an Inca who'd be sometimes called an 'Indian' (by the bad guys, as one would expect) and (oddly) by the show's narrator.

I'm I missing something here or has PC finally gone REALLY potty?

I really like this series you did. Very unique and very cute.
Haha, I definately get where you're coming from trying to avoid the (too many) racial stereotypes in food advertising, but I too always had a soft spot for her, so I'm obviously glad you did one of her.

I had a friend who used to work at a supermarket...He was always endlessly amused at the fact that when he ran Land O' Lakes butter over the scanner, it rang up as 'LOL BUTTER'. x3

Lovely work, Kevin.

Wild guess: the Native American maiden on Land O Lakes products hasn't been revamped because this (the area which includes Land O Lakes) used to be heavily populated by Native Americans. Dunno if it was any more or less so than other areas of the country, but many, many, many names around here are Native American (Seminole county, Withlacoochee River, even the state capital is a Native American word: Tallahassee. References to them are everywhere, and the LOL logo isn't particularly misrepresentative or derogatory so.. *shrug* I guess they just left well enough alone. Then again it may boil down to statistics: according to Wikipedia, the Native American/Pacific Islander population in the US is about one tenth that of African Americans.

Anyway, I think you're doing great on these, I'm really enjoying them! I'd never heard of UTZ before, but I recognized Land O Lakes immediately! (It helps that I've lived in this state all my life.)
kwsapphire Featured By Owner Oct 6, 2010  Hobbyist General Artist
HAH. Except I went and looked it up and they're actually based out of Minnesota, not FL. I didn't even think about how many Land O Lakes there might be, despite having been born in one of several cities named Jacksonville. DOH! ;]

That is beautiful! I love it. This is my favorite of your Lovely Lady Mascot cards.

I don't find Uncle Ben or Aunt Jemima racist at all. They are just portraits of people on a product. They seem well drawn/painted too. Nothing off about them at all (to me at least).
InvaderPhantomstar1 Featured By Owner Oct 6, 2010
Aunt Jemimma, I actually thought, could afford to be painted just tad bit better  but get your point.

Now she's another familiar face. I use her butter quite bit. (Margarine...Puh-leaze! A substitute is no match for the real deal.) I think she's the only one of the racist/insensitive mascot category that wasn't more than slightly so. She's got some real staying power, especially when one considers the massive changes her contemporaries have gone through. (Particularly Aunt Jemima.)

If you're doing Wendy and don't also do Judy, it will be a travesty of justice :) (Also: are we getting the St. Pauli Girl?)
kevinbolk Featured By Owner Oct 6, 2010

(And heck yes! ^_^)
Temphis Featured By Owner Oct 6, 2010  Professional General Artist
Once upon a time, there was Wendy's and there was Judy's. Virtually identical chains (Judy's had a blue color scheme and a different girl mascot but otherwise identical food, identical furniture, etc), but Judy's long gone ... I've never read a definitive account of what was going on, but what I've read indicates that Judy's was a deliberate note-for-note knockoff of Wendy's and was basically beaten down by legal action.

(and it wouldn't really be a travesty of anything to skip Judy ... just a childhood memory that I suspect only a fraction of the audience is old enough or dull enough to recall ... I actually ate at Judy's a few years before I ever saw a Wendy's, and originally believed Wendy's was the knockoff chain as a result!) :)
