You da man Hawk. Epic quote too. "My goal is simple. A complete understanding of the universe." Kind of like "What are we going to do tonight, brain?" "Same thing we do every night. TRY TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD!"

Narf.

Oooh oooh, or the line that Stephen King delivered in that episode of the simpsons where they meet him and he's marketing some book that at the surface doesn't sound like a horror book, but he clearly has unavoidably found a way to turn it into one.

That's one heck of a goal. I don't believe anyone ever could fully understand the world... Though we can always get closer and gain more knowledge about it :>

yes, but how and why does it follow the laws that it follows, we want to know HOW God created it.

Why not just have faith & live forthe Lord instead of questioning him.

It's not questioning, I understand God created the universe, wrote it laws, and we are subject to his power, but haven't you been curious as to how it works? Yes God made it that way, but what is "that way," how do we define it with math? I have faith in God, and am in wonder about what He created, we scientists just like to find out how it works, and how it was made, sort of like a child taking a toy apart, or a mechanic tinkering with a car. But using math and science not wrenches and screwdrivers.

That's wonderful that you have faith in God but honestly until we get to Heaven that is when will will understand it. & I am curious about the universe but I just put my faith in God that he'll control & make the universe work however he does it.

True, I guess we who participate in science are just too curious to sit by. Not to continue an argument, but I see that science allows us to see each part of this magnificent symphony that God created, from it's largest melodies to each individual note, beginning to where we are now. to quote the Discovery Chanel, the world is just awesome. A piece of art worthy of God.

If he believes he can understand the entirety of the Universe, he vastly overrates his own abilities. My apologies, I have not particularly warm feelings towards Mr. Hawking.

It's not a belief that he will or even can. It's his goal to keep trying. Even if he won't ever know everything before he passes on, his goal to learn more about it is still constant. It's the journey, not the destination.

I'm more of a Human Sciences person. He's a theoretical physicist, which just doesn't tickle my fancy. Additionally, I don't like his attitude. He comes off smug and dismissive, and it makes it very hard for me to empathize with anything he does.
