Swiss Miss by kevinbolk Swiss Miss by kevinbolk
Up next in my expansion set of "Lovely Lady Mascot" art cards, we have the Swiss Miss of the Swiss Miss brand of hot cocoa/pudding mixes.

Of course, the mascot herself has not appeared on packages of Swiss Miss in YEARS, I felt as a child of the 80s who loved Swiss Miss pudding pops, I had to include her. Although it uses a lot of mildly stereotypical Swiss imagery, the Swiss Miss brand was actually created by American company (that was founded by a Sicilian immigrant). The brand has changed hands over the years and is currently owned by ConAgra Foods.

Weird personal fact: My high school girlfriend looked a lot like the Swiss Miss, so drawing this brought back some pleasant memories. Good, though oftentimes awkward, times those. :D

Next up: The Chicken of the Sea Mermaid.

Swiss Miss is a registered trademark of ConAgra Foods, Inc.

Sicila is about 1000 miles south from Switzerland in Italy. It's famous for olives, oranges and pistache ice cream. Well, who cares! ;-)

Having a cup of Swiss Miss hot cocoa right now... At 2 in the morning (don't judge me.) It's very tasty.

Ah yes, I remember her claymation ads from the 60's and 70's.
A white (my TV was B&W in those days so that is an assumption) Swiss Miss figurine comes to life, does her yodel and commences to very kindly pitch her product. Her job done, she dutifully returned to her spot and became a figurine again.

I like your take on her. This one somehow seems less likely to dutifully become inanimate again like her sweet 60's cousin.

I've always liked this mascot, but I don't think I've ever seen her. Sad. I really love your shading and highlighting, it's simple, but it looks fancy. ^_^

I could have sworn that I used to see her on hot cocoa and pudding as a child. I'll have to check if she's still around the next time I go to shoprite. She's cute.

If it's stereotypical and yet ok to draw this chick,... then why can't you do an Aunt Jamima artcard? :?

:iconkevinbolk:
kevinbolk Featured By Owner Nov 3, 2010
It's not the stereotypes that bother me (or else I wouldn't have included the Land-O-Lakes maiden either), it's the history of slave imagery that goes with Aunt Jemima that doesn't sit well with me. I could do her modern incarnation, but it's terribly dull (which was the reason I didn't include Betty Crocker either).

Daw, but the current Aunt Jemima has the best smile I've yet to see topped in any art portrait.

Then again, I guess her current outfit isn't very exotic, so I can see both sides I guess.

:icongaspplz: BETTY CROCKER!! I totally forgot about her!! ...?... I haven't seen aunt jamimas original incarnation... might you enlighten me about what she represents in slavery? does she have shackles on or something <eyebrow raised>

From what little I know, it has something to deal with her retro character as being, according to Wikipedia: "a domestic servant of African descent, generally good-natured, often overweight, and loud." I also think this is why the star of the princess and the frog got renamed from Maddy to Tiana. Being a 'slave name'.

All I can think of is 'dude', Disney has marketing power. If the protagonist was named Maddy they could've 'liberated' the stereotype instead of bending over for it. Acknowledge it and you give it more power.

so basically she's wearing an apron... and i bit over weight... (kinda reminds me of "Tom and Jerry"... :) nice memories. That lady was funny) or is she wearing rags? :eyes roll:

Yeah, I liked that woman as well, much more then Jerry honestly. (That mouse struck me more as the villain of the pair, even if Tom was more spiteful). Growing up in the era post Martin Luther King Jr., I only ever saw a home owner teaching her pet(s) a lesson. It wasn't until quite recently I learned that she was based upon a stereotype, and even then, I don't see the connection.

yes, that mouse was pure evil. That's what I saw too. The woman of the house teaching here cat how to behave. :nod:x2 I only started watching it about a year ago, and the stereotype thing didn't change anything about the cartoon for me cause... well that's probably how a woman would have acted in those situations, perhaps a bit less dramatic, but still the same.

:icondawooster:

Perhaps, but then again, it's a cartoon! Something'd be wrong if it wasn't on the dramatic side! Plus, how many woman have to deal with a cat who allegedly broke every plate, bowl, stair, and railing in the house? If anything an over reaction would be simply an under reaction!

But as an aside, I didn't like the Tom and Jerry shorts as much as I did say, the Looney Tunes. Tom and Jerry was effectively a one trick pony. Cat and mouse antagonize each other. With Looney Tunes, not that they weren't all one trick ponies, but you got to look at a lot of different one trick ponies. (Particularly the Road Runner shorts!)
