-This is the first appearance of the series main antagonist, the wicked Black Licorice. He's a walking parody of the armored supervillains of many early-mid 90's video game RPGs. I think he was inspired most by Golbez of Final Fantasy IV and the Magic Emperor of Lunar: Silver Star Story.
-This is also the first appearance of BL's gay henchmonkey's, Pork & Beans. In the prototype of this series (from my Severed Limbs Studios days), they were human. I changed the duo to apes to make them more interesting and because I imagine Black Licorice to not care much for humans (unless they're his idol, Ronald Reagan and his posse).
-Speaking of vaguely political humor, this strip was written during the build up to the current Iraq War, so the joke was kind of a nod to that. I try to avoid politics and current events in any of my work, but sometimes it creeps in if I deem it funny and/or bizarre enough (as is the case with the naked Capitalist faeries that appear later in the series).
-As much as I like the "burning panel" gag, I tried to avoid this kinda thing as the series went on as to make the whole thing easier to read and to limit the fourth wall breaking. This was still a lot of fun though.
Black licorice reminds me of the evil black licorice character in the candy land games! the guy that was in the middle of the board but didnt have any bad spaces so he was pretty much useless.
