Warriors of the Wind VHS Cover by kevinbolk Warriors of the Wind VHS Cover by kevinbolk
While searching my expansive VHS collection for Christmas specials I dug up this old "classic": Warriors of the Wind, the god-awful American dub of Hayao Miyazaki's Nausicaa and the Valley of the Wind from the mid '80s.

The cover is so grossly misleading and laughably bad that it's actually kind of awesome.

Nausicaa..I mean, uh, "Princess Zandra" flying her mini-spaceship thing while sporting a big old knife. Marvel at why she's floating in the background when she's the main character.

The lightsaber-toting Fire God riding (along with the rest of the cast) on the back of ANOTHER Fire God (WITH HUGE F*CK-OFF WINGS!).

The laser-blasting robot and pod-racer Anakin Skywalker riding a pegasus. JUST LIKE IN THE MOVIE!!

And I just adore how all the guys are holding thier guns like gleeful terrorists. I hope they understand it's very hard to fire those things that way.

Anhywho, let me leave you guys with the bad-ass description from the back of the box:

"It is one thousand years in the future and makind is still recovering from the Seven Days of Fire, an event that left civilization in ruins. Hostile and warring nations are closing in on Princess Zandra's Valley of the Wind from north and south, while the Toxic Jungle, which expels a deadly gas, is rapidly sweeping across the land.

Warriors of the Wind is your invitation to epic adventure--a sweeping drama of larger-than-life warriors and heroes. A voyage through time and space to the magical and dreamlike Valley of the Wind where good battles evil for the future of the human race. A futuristic fantasy where survival of the fittest is the rule and ALL men live in fear.

Faced with almost certain destruction, Princess Zandra must ralley her people against Queen Salena's brutal army, against the lethal Fire Dragon, and against hordes of Giant Gorgons to bring a new life to herself, her homeland, and her beloved people."

Absolutely priceless. Couldn't understand why Miyazaki wouldn't let his stuff be brought to the US for almost 20 years afterward. :P

Oh, and of course, I don't own this art. Not entirely sure who does, but God bless 'em. XD

Okay, I have some notes for this.

1. Somebody, make a fanfiction based on this cover!  Maybe the four other people are a dimensional traveling group who want to take Nausicaa along with them on their travels and one of them altered himself to look like a God Warrior because he thinks they look really cool.
2. I looked up the meaning of the names Nausicaa and Zandra.  Nausicaa is derived from a Latin word which means "Burner of ships".  Nausicaa was also the name of a daughter of Alcinous who helps Odysseus on his journey home.  Zandra is a shortened version of Alexandra the feminine version of Alexander which means "Defender of Mankind".  Call me crazy, but I think the name Zandra might actually fit Nausicaa's personality better.

the only thing they got even close to being accurate was Nausicaa. and she's not wearing her pants. (sigh)
Kaptain-Kefiah Featured By Owner Aug 2, 2014  Hobbyist Traditional Artist me crazy, but i think that, even if Warriors of the Wind was atrocious, this poster is kinda cool.

Such a bizarre cover LOL as half the things on this cover aren't even in the movie! which makes it all the more funny lol

Here's an interesting bit of trivia that's sort of related to the subject of Warriors of the Wind - during the Cold War, many Eastern Bloc sci-fi film underwent a similar treatment, being cut to ribbons and badly re-dubbed for distribution in North America. Three particularly egregious examples of this butchery are Der schweigende Stern, Planeta Bur, and Nebo Zovyot, which which got badly re-edited into First Spaceship on Venus, Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet, and Battle Beyond the Sun, respectively.

Oh. And I agree with you about this cover being awesome. I also love that someone out there made this because I got to grow up with this movie and I still love it... and I do collect Nausicaa stuff all the time. I went to japan last month and we went to the Ghibli Museum. I got a little Ohmu statue. It's sooo cute.

I grew up with this movie and this is the first time I've ever seen this vhs cover. Where did that pegasus come from? My mom copied every movie we had. So we had about 4 to 5 movies on each old copied tapes. I like the voice acting more than I liked (hated) the disney voice actors for the dvd release in 2004 (?) The actress they chose for Nausicaa was soooo boring. I prefer to watch with subtitles.

this was the star wars holiday special of studio ghibli.

I'd suggest picking up Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind on dvd (which is Warriors of the Wind, unedited).

Other good animated films from back then were Heavy Metal, Light Years, Wizards, Fire & Ice, and Rock & Rule. There was also Starchaser the Legend of Orin (but the ending is kinda cheesy).

Despite an amount of internet outcry Warriors of the Wind is nowhere near as bad as many would have you believe. In this time of easily accessible DVD releases it's easy to accuse New World of desecrating a masterpiece but you must remember that their version brought the wonder of Miyazaki's work to a whole new audience and without it far fewer people would know of it's existence. I absolutely adored this film as a kid and watched the VHS tape of it until it wore out. I only learnt that "WotW was an edited film in 2005. I have both versions now, the uncut blu ray of Nausicaa and the old WotW I copied to a DVD.

WotW dub can be downloaded from here:

That said, this VHS cover is awful and totally misleading. The European VHS cover was much better:

Well I've noticed the Cardcaptors dub is kind of an acceptable target but because I grew up watching it on CiTV I have a fondness for it. I watched episode one of the Japanese version and didn't notice a hell of a difference. Also I think again the American version of the dub is supposed to be worse than the European version that I saw. People talk about them bringing gender equality into a magical girl show like it's a bad thing. Warriors of the Wind [I'm assuming] looks like it prioritised the man and relegated the woman to the sidelines [I don't know, I haven't seen it] whereas all the dub of Cardcaptors did was keep Sakura as the main character but not have Li be quite so minor.

When I saw this cover, I thinked WTF is this? Then I laughted. Then I get angry. This is greatest rape of movie history for masterpiece

I watched about a half-hour of it on YouTube, but I had to stop because it was too tragic :XD:

Love the 2005 re-dub though :D

It looks like it ripped off Dune, Star Trek and Star Wars all in one shot lol
CyrusGrissom Featured By Owner May 1, 2011
Indeed and Heavy Metal as well! did you ever see this movie in it's cut format or in the uncut Nausicaa?

I never heard of this movie.
JuMiKu Featured By Owner Apr 19, 2011
When I first heard what they did, I found it insulting. They completely reversed the whole message of the movie. Fighting and war is awesome and the only way to ensure our survival, evil exists and nature can and has to be dominated. Way to go America.
CyrusGrissom Featured By Owner Apr 4, 2011
Did you know this movie is one of the inspirations to Avatar? James Cameron's movie.

JC is a huge fan of animation, adult animation, Euro-animation, Japanimation, Ghibli, westerns and Sci-fi/fantasy novels. This is his favorite Miyazaki movie and is one of the various sources he used for Avatar, there are similarities you got to admit.

This movie was one of my childhood favorites since 1986 when i was 5 years old when i rented it on video and loved it, i had a crush on Nausicaa when she was called Zondra and i loved how they had Keneda from Akira (1989 dub) and Leonardo from Ninja Turtles as Asobel (aka Prince Milo in the original dub), Hal Smith (Gyro and Glumgold) from Ducktales as Yupa and Axel and Linda Gary of He-Man fame in it. I even had my mom tape it for me on an extra VCR and i even watched it whenever it came out on HBO.

I didn't realize that the movie i grew up loving and watching was a bad butchery until i was 16 when i saw it in my city's high school anime club in it's uncut fansub tape version and i even made myself a copy of it and even owned the CD soundtrack since then.

Thank god for a new uncut dub version
kevinbolk Featured By Owner Apr 4, 2011
That original dub (in terms of the quality of the voice actors) was actually REALLY good. It's just too bad the script was a little rough and they cut the heck out of it. I still watch it occasionally for the nostalgia. ^_^

That's AWESOME! Nausicaa is my favorite movie but i don't remember the VHS version very well because I was like 4 or 5. Is it the same as the modern "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind"? If so that cover is badass but VERY misleading haha. This is definetly going in my favs.

This is the anime version of the Mega Man NES Cover Art. Like the movie's cover art, the game's cover art is grossly misleading and laughably bad. The game box art is so bad it's hilarious, but the movie box art is so bad it's cool.

I love how everyone has magically turned blonde! XD Not to mention the flying horse seems to have taken place of the birds used as transportation in the movie. The only thing that really confuses me though is the robot.
LazyJenny Featured By Owner Dec 19, 2009
That is supposed to be Nausicaa? I saw it a few years ago and don't remember it all, but this cover rings no bells. At all. And it looks nothing like Miyazaki's art, which makes it even harder to recognize...
SuperBunnyBun Featured By Owner Dec 18, 2009 I never did see Nausica, in face I've yet to see anything done by miyazaki outside of a lupin movie, but still. I doubt it looks like this. The cover makes it look like something between buck rogers and xanadu.

As much as I like the actual film, I wouldn't mind seeing a film that actually somehow relates to the characters on the cover

You know, now that I think about it, I might have to agree. For some reason, though, I see it as a bad 80s live action sci-fi movie. Which now intrigues me to no end.

I remember the Warriors of the Wind stuff (we have a "copy" of it from way back when) but I never saw the box art until recently. Growing up only seeing the US version, I still like it for nostalgic reasons. However, some of the lines were sold pretty well by the voice actors in it in my opinion.

I agree it's still a total thrashing of one mans work that shouldn't have been done in the first place, but I can't help myself wanting a better copy of that US version. Just the old nostalgia kicking in I guess.
kevinbolk Featured By Owner Dec 18, 2009
I totally understand. I used to LOVE this as a kid and, come on, the box art is AMAZING. XD

I own the 2nd-gen copy from my childhood, but I managed to find this copy I scanned the box from at a flea market a few years back. You just need to know where I look, I guess.
